Start by treating the first shift as three connected jobs: run the store, investigate customers, and preserve personal earnings for your pet. Reviewed Steam release-build footage shows a $40 medicine payment after Night 3; later, the save-Clyde route can require $250 after Night 13. If a non-human customer gets away, it can return later in that shift as a Hunt.

Key takeaways

  • Treat store work, customer investigation, and personal profit as connected first-shift responsibilities.
  • Choose a pet before the first shift and preserve personal earnings for the observed $40 medicine payment after Night 3.
  • Story shifts are randomized, so follow the current objectives instead of a fixed customer or task order.
  • A missed non-human can return as a Hunt; barricades, traps, and hiding are the confirmed survival responses.
  • Store balance and personal earnings are separate; the later True Ending route uses a separate $250 personal-funds decision.

Before the first shift: choose a pet

The official July 8 pets announcement says the full game begins with a choice of four pets: a cat, husky, puppy, or goose. Your pet needs medicine within the first three shifts, so the opening goal is not only the store's nightly quota. You also need enough personal profit to pay for the medicine.

The official announcement does not publish the medicine price, but two current Steam launch-build reviews close that gap for the reviewed release: the payment shown after Night 3 is $40. No source supports different pet stats, an optimal shopping route, or guaranteed cross-platform parity, so choose the companion you want rather than an undocumented economic advantage.

First-shift operating loop

Use this as a decision loop, not a fixed event schedule. Story Mode shifts are randomly generated.

  1. Read the current task list. Check what this build and shift actually ask you to complete before assuming an older walkthrough applies.
  2. Keep the station functional. Stock shelves, receive deliveries, clean, serve customers, and make sales toward the nightly quota.
  3. Investigate while serving. You may ask up to five questions. Check the customer's ID, computer record, and behaviour before making a decision.
  4. Choose the customer branch. Serve or release a customer you judge human. The official description says a suspected non-human can be executed on site, after which the scene still needs cleaning.
  5. Track both economic goals. The store quota and personal earnings are not interchangeable. Preserve enough personal money for the observed $40 medicine payment after Night 3.
  6. React if a threat escaped. A missed doppelganger can return later that shift. Move from store work to the current Hunt-preparation objectives.

This order is a readable working loop, not an official speedrun route. A randomized shift may overlap or reorder tasks.

What the first task note shows

Two July 22 gameplay videos show the same useful UI pattern:

In both videos, that note includes practical station work such as cleaning rubbish or remains, mopping blood, and restocking from boxes. Treat the note as the current shift's checklist. Do not copy a video's task order, values, or customer sequence and assume every randomized run matches it.

Customer decision checklist

Before allowing a customer to leave or choosing the other branch, ask which details you actually checked:

  • Did I use any of the available questions that can clarify this customer?
  • Did I inspect the ID rather than relying only on appearance?
  • Did I compare available details with the computer record?
  • Did I consider behaviour as a separate channel?
  • Am I making this decision from the current shift, not a demo answer list?

The game provides up to five questions. The official pages do not say that every customer requires all five, publish an optimal order, or provide a complete anomaly answer list. See the investigation guide for a practical checking routine.

If the shift becomes a Hunt

The official descriptions support barricading doors, placing traps, and hiding. The two linked July 22 videos also show a preparation objective involving a storage-room weapon. Follow the objectives displayed in your build, survive the Hunt, then complete any cleanup and exit instruction that follows. The Hunt guide walks through that flow.

How to know the shift is complete

The two videos show a post-shift Night Complete screen with store or quota results and personal earnings shown separately. The displayed numbers belong to those runs and are not fixed targets for another randomized shift.

For the first three shifts, aim to finish with:

  • the current shift reaches its completion state;
  • the store's displayed objective is resolved for that shift;
  • personal earnings are being preserved toward the $40 Steam release-build medicine payment; and
  • any Hunt and post-Hunt cleanup shown by the current build are complete.

What is not confirmed yet

The official pages and linked videos do not provide:

  • a fixed first-shift task or customer order;
  • exact quota progression, item margins, or a guaranteed best-profit route;
  • a guaranteed doppelganger tell;
  • a fixed Hunt timer, best weapon, trap layout, or safe hiding spot; and
  • the consequence of missing the medicine goal.

Quick answers

Is there a fixed first-shift walkthrough?

No. Story Mode shifts are randomly generated, so use the current task list and the operating loop above rather than expecting a fixed customer or task order.

Are the store quota and pet-medicine goal the same?

No. The nightly store quota and personal earnings are separate goals. Reviewed Steam release-build footage shows the medicine payment as $40 after Night 3; it does not establish a universal quota or best-profit formula.

What happens if a doppelganger gets away?

A missed non-human can return later in the same shift as a Hunt. Barricading doors, placing traps, and hiding are the confirmed high-level responses.
